President

Prof. Sunil Kumar Gupta, Vice Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh University, and President, IIHS, is providing his valuable services to the Himachal Pradesh University for the last 29 years. Prof. Gupta joined the university as a research fellow in the year 1979. Thereafter from the year 1981 to 1985 he worked as a Research Associate. He joined the Department of Commerce, Himachal Pradesh University, as a lecturer in the year 1985, further he became Reader and then a Professor in the year 2000. He remained the Chairman in the Department of Commerce from 2000-2002 and 2004-2006. He also remained Coordinator in the Institute of Management Studies, Himachal Pradesh University, from 1996 to 2003. He has guided seven Ph.Ds and more than fifty M. Phil students. He has completed more than eighteen research projects sponsored by different funding agencies such as H.P. Government, UGC, ministry of HRD and Institute of Integrated Himalayan Studies. He has published six books and seventeen research papers. Prof. Gupta headed important positions such as President of Teachers Association in H.P. University Shimla and Secretary of Himachal Pradesh University Teachers Welfare Association, Shimla. Presently Prof. Gupta is member of various academic bodies and NGOs. He is the Chairman of SPARASH, Shimla, Chairman of Executive and Advisory Committee of Institute of Integrated Himalayan Studies (UGC Centre of Excellence), H.P. University, Shimla.

Prof. (Mrs.) Vidya Sharda: Prof. (Mrs.) Vidya Sharda was born in a remote village of district Shimla. Inspired by her parents, Prof. Vidya got her higher Secondary education from her native village. She did her graduation from Kanya Mahavidyalya Jullender and Post graduation from Punjab University, Chandigarh. She was awarded doctorate degree from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla and she was the first doctorate from tehsil Chopal. She was appointed as a Sanskrit lecturer in department of Distance education in the University, in 1977. In 1984, she joined as a lecturer in the P.G. centre of Himachal Pradesh University. Thereafter she was selected as Associate Professor in 1992 and Professor in the year 1999. She remained the warden of the H.P.U. girls Hostel for twenty years. She headed the department of Sanskrit from 2005-2007 and is presently the Dean, faculty of Languages. Her area of interest is ancient literature and Indian Philosophy. She has completed a major project funded by UGC on "Impact of Pauraanik Literature on the Folk Life of People of Himachal Pradesh" in the year 2005. She has supervised eleven Ph.Ds and more than fifty M.Phil candidates and presently supervising nine Ph.Ds and four M. Phil candidates. She is influenced by Vedic Sahitya, epics, Puranas and Dharamshaastras. She has written four books pertaining to Indian heritage, history of Dharamshastras and so on. She was honored by Swami Ramanand Acharya Samiti. She is an active member of National Council of Sahitya Academy (National Academy of Letters), Sanskrit State Academy, University Court, Academic Council and other university bodies and Red Cross Society, Shimla.

Dr. Virender K. Santvan;; M.Sc, Ph.D (Lecturer, Environmental Science) has 10 years post Ph. D experience and his main field of specialization is Mountain Environment and Bio-diversity. He has been associated with the Institute of Integrated Himalayan Studies since its inception in April, 2002. He was associated with the Centre of Environmental Studies, Himachal Pradesh University during 1994-2001. He has work experience in various fields including ecosystem and biodiversity projects supported by the State Council for Science Technology and Environment, Govt. of Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat Ambuja Cement (Ltd.). He has been teaching Ecology in the Department of Biosciences in Himachal University and has also worked with the G.B. Pant Institute on Himalaya Environment and Development.

Dr. Richa (Lecturer, Social Sciences) has completed her MPhil and PhD in Development Studies from Jawaharlal Nehru University. Her preferred areas of specialization and interest include community participation, sustainable development, eco-tourism, education, enterprise and health. She has been actively engaged in the development sector over the last five years and has a gender affirmative perspective. She has worked with various NGOs and academic agencies in project coordination/implementation, awareness generation programmes, research and teaching. She was a research fellow for a project on "Nature based tourism in South Asian countries" sponsored by the South Asian Network of Economic Institutes (SANEI). She has done consultancy for CRY, NACO, UNIFEM and Project Development Corporation of Rajasthan (PDCOR) on projects related to juvenile justice, Drop-in-Centers for HIV/AIDS, Violence against Women and Educational infrastructure development under the public-private partnership model for Jalore district in Rajasthan.

Dr. Rattan Singh Chauhan (Research Associate); Ph.D, (History) from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. His area of specialization is socio-cultural and historical aspects of hill states. He has also acquired work experience in the department of Art, Languages and Culture, Himachal Pradesh and is currently doing research on role of various academic agencies and NGO's in Watershed Management and Agro marketing.

Dr. Sanjeev Kumar(Research Associate), Ph.D (Political Science) from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. His areas of Specialization are Sustainable Development, Watershed Management and Good Governance; He is also actively associated with an NGO called Indian Democratic Individuals Research Association.

Dr. Randhir Ranta (Research Associate) Ph.D, (Psychology) from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. His area of specialization is Clinical Psychology and he also holds a Diploma in Marketing Management. He is strongly associated with NGOs who are working in fields including rural artisans, Yoga and Relaxation therapy.

Dr. Pawan K. Attri (Research Associate), ), PhD (Zoology) from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. His areas of interest are Environmental Biology, Radiation Biology, Apiculture and Environmental management and conservation. He has acquired five years research experience and has been associated with IIHS since its conception. He is also engaged with various NGOs (MRDA, WWF) as a resource person for research in Environment related projects and has also taught in academic institutes in Himachal.

Dr. Pankaj Gupta (Research Associate), Ph. D. (Zoology) is working in the institute since its inception. His areas of interest are village studies, natural resource management, primary health care, health oriented problems of women and children particularly nutritional, anthropometric and dietary studies, traditional health care systems and magico-religious methods of healing, ethno-Cultural, Ethno-ecological and audiovisual documentation of culture and nature. Dr. Joginder Singh Saklani (Research Associate), M. A., M. Phil., Ph. D (Political Science) from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. He has completed his Ph. D. in “Question of Tamil Nationality in Sri Lanka: Dynamics of Majority and Minority Nationalism”. He is topper in MA (Political Science) and awarded Gold Madel by Himotakarsh Sahitya Sanskriti Evam Jan Kalyan Parishad, Una on 2001. He was awarded Subject wise fellowship in MA and Junior Research Fellowship during his M. Phil. and Ph.D. course. He was engaged in teaching in Govt. College Sarkaghat, HPU Regional Centre Dharmshala, L. R Institute of Legal Studies, Solan and PG Centre Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. His Area of interest is Socio-economic and political issues.


Dr. Pushpa Thakur (Project Associate) Ph.D. (Zoology) from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. Her area of specialization and interest include Radiation Biology, Animal Muscle Physiology, Environmental Ecology and Fisheries.

Kuldeep Singh (Project Associate) is pursuing his Ph.D in Geography from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. His areas of specialization are remote sensing, human geography, physical geography and watershed and sustainable development. He is associated with various NGO's and organizations such as National Institute for Rural Development and Fulbright for assisting in field survey

Chaman Premi (Project Associate), M.Phil is pursuing his PhD in Geography from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. His areas of specialization are human geography, cultural geography and the caste system in India. He is also a journalist and is associated with different news papers.

Sh. Nitin Vyas (Project Fellow), MTA from HPU, Shimla. Presently perusing Ph. D in faculty of commerce and management. He was engaged in teaching in Rajeev Gandhi Govt. College, Shimla, St. Bede’s College, Shimla and Hotel Management Institute, Solan. His area of interest is Eco-tourism and sustainable tourism development.
