Heritage Buildings of Shimla and Around, Ashok Jerath, Association of Litterateurs Folklorists & Artist, Jammu

Shimla's buildings are magnificent including some with architectural forms that owe their inspiration to Europe and monuments of imperial might. In Shimla grandiose buildings rose to dominate the hillsides. The famous architects created imperial edifices like the grey stone Viceregal Lodge, the present day Indian Institute of Advanced Study, the colossal neo-Gothic Town Hall (whose stump houses the Gaiety Theatre), the Norman-baronial District Courts and the imperial civil secretariat, now AG office at Gorton castle. Among the earliest buildings were Kennedy house, Christ Church Lodge, Christ Church Annexy (present State Library on the ridge). All old monuments in Shimla have a historical background though the history of some is lost/unknown to many of us. Chail Palace located on the Rajgarh hill 86km from Shimla is another beautiful monument. Jakhu temple, Kali Bari and Tara Devi temple in and around Shimla are ancient monuments.
