Tea of Himachal Pradesh, R.G. Sud, Shipra Publications, New Delhi

Efforts are afoot to bring new area under tea cultivation in Himachal. New strategies particularly aimed at enhancing yield, improving quality, reduction in cost of production, inter-cropping, organic farming, product diversification and enhancing the demand for Kangra valley tea are required to be formulated. The major thrust areas of endeavour should include rejuvenation and repair of soil in the tea gardens, development of new clones that would yield several times the current yield, development of genetically engineered plants having short dormancy period and adaptable to changing weather conditions, acquiring ISO ratings for tea gardens and factories of Himachal Pradesh, creating awareness among tea growers about the use of organic manure and biological control of pests, decreasing cost of production to increase profits and reinvestments, validating the distinct qualities of Kangra tea, using modern communication means for advertisement and marketing and using modern management skills to develop human resource. It is envisaged that this study will offer an insight into the present status of tea of Himachal Pradesh. Coupled with an extensive survey it will definitely serve as guiding tool in formulating visionary strategies to benefit the tea of Himachal Pradesh.
