Technologies and Sustainability: An analysis of Hydrams Installation in Himachal Pradesh, P.K. Vaid, Department of Public Administration, HPU, Shimla - 5

In the study, an attempt has been made to survey at least 8 districts of Himachal Pradesh in order to analyze the status of hydram- controlled irrigation and its effects on the agro-economy of the local farmers. The main objectives of the study were to assess the status of the installed hydrams in eight districts; to conduct a questionnaire-based survey on various issues on hydrams installed at the individual and community level & to make suggestions on the effective and long-term success of the hydram technology in the hydram feasible areas in the state. The study revealed that in all the eight surveyed districts in the state, maximum percentage of farmers attributed the prime source of hydram information to the role of District Rural Development Agency, DRDA of HP Govt. followed by HIMURJA as the second most prominent hydram information provider. Maximum percentage of respondents were of the opinion that they had no training from any agency about the hydram technology, its functioning and about it maintenance.  Study revealed that a very less percentage of the community members in most of the survey areas were of the opinion that hydram installation was a long-term solution to the local irrigation problem.  The study recommended identification of local NGOs working in the area of hydram irrigation management, watershed programme and sustainability of the natural resources in the state.
