Technical Education in Himachal Pradesh, Piar Chand, Department of Humanities, NIT, Hamirpur

Industrial training Institutes are one of the major Institutional sources for the supply of craftsmen in Himachal Pradesh. The report discusses the status of technical education in Himachal Pradesh. The report highlights that there are at present 18 ITI’s including one for the physically handicapped under the Directorate of Technical Education & Industrial Training, Sundernagar. Sixteen of these ITI’s are catering to and giving incentives to women candidates. Himachal Pradesh also has Government Polytechnic Colleges at Sundernagar, Hamirpur, Kandaghat,Rohru, Kangra, and Ambota catering to the technical education in the state. Also the National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur was established in 1986 as a joint and cooperative enterprise of the Government of India and the Government of Himachal Pradesh. It further highlights arrangements made by Himachal Pradesh University for orientation into information technology for students pursuing certain courses such as management studies and tourism administration. The department of Computer Sciences was set up in the University in 1987 and the Biotechnology department of the University came into existence in 1995 while the University Institute of Information Technology came into being in the year 2000. The report also takes into account the contributions made by remaining two Universities of the State in education and research related to agriculture, horticulture and forestry located at Nauni and Palampur. In the private sector institutes such as the Jaypee University of Information Technology (JUIT) at Waknaghat, Solan; the International Institute of Telecom Technology (IITT) at Kala Amb, the Institute of Engineering & Emerging Technology (IEET) at Baddi, Shoolini Institute of Life Sciences and Business Management, Solan also find their mention in the report. 11 industrial training institutions (ITIs), 76 vocational training centres, 2 food craft training centres and 15 para medical centres set up by the government are taken into account in the report.
