Tapping the Neglected and Hidden Potential
of Tourism in Himachal Pradesh, Kulwant Pathania,

Present study is an attempt
to examine the performance of H.P. Tourism Industry. The study
has proved helpful in analyzing lacunae in the existing marketing
practices, problems and shortcomings in the field of infrastructure
development, quality of transport, accommodation entertainment,
recreation and publicity. The main objectives of the study were
to analyse the tourism scenario in the state and examine the performance
and possibility of tapping neglected potential to tourism. To
give the final shape to the study, information was collected through
informal interviews with tourists’ guides, social workers and
governmental and non-governmental agencies contributing to the
development of tourism industry. The study reveals that Himachal
Pradesh is one of the leading states in the field of tourism in
India and since last ten years there has been a great development
in the tourism of the state. The main strength of Himachal’s tourism
lies in its history, tradition, culture and the beautiful spots
like Kullu, Manali and Shimla. The study finds that the ratio
of the male and female for domestic have been noted 220:80 in
case of foreign tourists. Further the study indicates that educated
tourists visited Himachal Pradesh more as compared to less educated,
and in case of foreign tourists the largest group belonged to
professional and other category. The study has made suggestions
for the improvement of better tourism potential, which can prove
beneficial for the development of tourism in Himachal Pradesh.
