Prospecting of Pine Needles as Resource of Specialty Materials and Fine Chemicals, Ghanshyam S. Chauhan, Department of Chemistry, HPU, Shimla – 5

The principle objective of the study was to prepare low cost and eco-friendly adhesives using a forest waste after functionalization via carboxymethylation reaction. As follows from the review of literature or investigations into the state of art of this proposal, preparation of adhesives based on carboxymethylation of wood or its parts are generally the cellulosics.  They naturally add to costs. In line with the requirements of eco-friendly procedures as per the tenets of green chemistry, any derivatization reactions should be avoided, if possible. Many formulations with the carboxymethylated pine needles, and also without it by an improvised process have been prepared. However, it comes out that non-carboxymethylated pine needles afforded better glue ability to the products and is a better-suited process to meet environmental issues. The results of scientific and commercial interests are reproduced in this report after thoughtful screening.
