An Evaluation of Rural Development in Himachal
Pradesh: A Case Study of Tribal Districts, Sunil Gupta, Indus

In the study, major rural development programmes implemented by
the State have been studied particularly in reference to the tribal
areas i.e. Chamba, Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti. The study has analyzed
the problems in the implementation of rural development schemes
and suggested remedial measures. The study has been conducted
to cover a period of 5 to 10 years depending upon the particular
schemes under its purview. The main objectives of the study were
to study the various rural development schemes in Himachal Pradesh;
to analyze the socio-economic profile of the beneficiaries; to
analyze the impact of rural development schemes in tribal areas;
to study the problems in implementation of rural development schemes
in tribal areas and to suggest remedial measures in the implementation
of rural development schemes. The main conclusions drawn were
that the rural development schemes have positive impact on the
economic development of tribal areas; the rural development schemes
have positive impact on the socio- cultural development of tribal
areas; the rural development schemes have positive impact on the
infrastructure development of tribal areas; the rural development
schemes have positive impact on the non-farm sectors. Small scale
Industries and priority sectors in tribal areas and the people
of the area rate the quality of rural development schemes as good.
