Population, Urbanization and Sustainable Environment an Exploration into What Blemished the Queen of Hills, S.K. Sharma, Department of Sociology, HPU, Shimla - 5

The report addresses the broader issues in the context of urbanization of hills and the subsequent problems faced by the society at large.  The metaphoric expression blemished queen is used symbolically to describe and discuss the deteriorating environment of Shimla, once called the Queen of Hills.  The study also addresses the urban policy and planning, the role of town and country planning department in checking illegal urban growth, tourism, municipal administration and its functioning, resources and management of municipal services and so on.  The study discusses three major issues:  First, the theoretical perspective regarding the relationship between population, urbanization and environment.  Second deals with development and growth of Shimla in historical and contemporary perspective.  Third discusses people’s response to various aspects of the city as a place of tourism amenities and their distribution] and the role of municipal corporation in the maintenance of municipal services and so on.  Finally, an attempt has been made to look after certain measures for the sustainability of environment of Queen of Hills to do away with the scars caused by the unplanned growth and expansion of the city.
