In
this study an effort has been made to understand the concept of
sustainable development in the context of Information and Communication
Technologies (ICT) and exploring the empowerment potential of
ICT for people in tribal areas. The findings of the study are
based upon the field observations in Pangi Valley and Lahaul area.
The investigation conducted has thrown up several issues of relevance
to the practitioners of development. The findings clearly pointed
out the need to exploit the potential of Information and Communication
Technology in the direction of fostering sustainable development
in a participatory mode. Suggestions have been made to harness
Information and Communication Technology. The most significant
finding of the study has been that the internet can greatly reduce
reliance on single-line-administration which has been in place
thus far largely on account of the information inaccessibility
in these remote areas.
