Documentation of Selected Technological Options for Agriculture in Himachal Pradesh, C.S. Vaidya and Ranveer Singh, AERC, HPU, Shimla – 5

In Himachal Pradesh, the agro-climatic and geo-physical conditions make it almost impossible to opt for the large-scale capital intensive technologies. It is therefore mandatory that the low cost technologies, which blend with local conditions perfectly, be opted. This problem is further aggravated by the poor quality of land resources, combined with marginalized communities, low resource base and low capital formation. A few technologies adopted in Himachal Pradesh have been documented for this report. These technologies have been selected from the fields of agriculture, horticulture, smallholder dairying and product packaging etc. These have turned out to be appropriate technologies and hence have a scope for replication in areas having similar agro-climatic and socio-economic conditions. The report includes technologies related to hydram for irrigation, greenhouses for managing environment at micro level, relay cropping of garlic and potato, bulk milk coolers and electronic milk testers for measurement, gravity ropeways, sprinkler irrigation etc.
