Community Participation in Natural Resource Management in Himachal Pradesh, Richa, IIHS, HPU, Shimla – 5

The need for Community participation in the Himalayas and particularly in Himachal Pradesh can not be overestimated. In this work an attempt has been made to study the impact and need of community participation in the state of Himachal Pradesh.  The objectives of the study were to study the background and current status of natural resources in the state with respect to forests, grasslands, soil and water; to study the role of institutional framework and policy interventions in natural resource management; to study the role of community participation and local self governance in natural resource management and to study the role of community participation in community health and micro-enterprise promotion. Governance, community and natural resource management, decentralization, community rights and sustainable use of natural resources are motifs leading the development discourse of our times. The historical articulation of these thematic, their multiple meanings and contemporary implications in India and in Himachal Pradesh in particular are the contents of this report.
