REPORTS /
MEMIOGRAPH
Agriculture in Himachal Pradesh, Ranveer
Singh and C.S. Vaidya, AERC.
The objectives of this report were to study
the agro-climatic conditions; agricultural
systems and trends in area; production and productivity of crops
in Himachal Pradesh; to study the institutions created development
programmes initiated by the government for agriculture in the
state and to examine the constraints in agriculture development
in the state. The study has highlighted that agriculture has
an important place in the economy of Himachal Pradesh as it is
single largest industry providing direct or indirect employment
to about 75 percent population of the state and contributes more
than half of net domestic product of the state. Due to this fact
this sector continues to receive adequate attention from the state
government. In the report, problems such as small size of land
holdings, lack of irrigational facilities, low consumption of
chemical fertilizers, lack of road infrastructures are highlighted.
The report suggests strategies for agriculture development in
Himachal Pradesh by promoting cultivation of off-season vegetables,
floriculture, export of potato and flowers. The report has pinpointed
future emerging areas in agriculture such as cultivation of high
value and low volume crops, medicinal and aromatics plants, promotion
of niche-based agricultural crops and organic manure based agricultural
products.
