Impact of Renewable Natural Resources on Rural Economy of Himachal Pradesh, D.V. Singh and C.S. Vaidya, AERC, HPU, Shimla - 5

The report is based on the need to study human-natural resource interactions and institutional arrangements and valuation of natural resources from ecological perspectives for their sustainable use. The objectives were to examine the extent and status of renewable natural resources in Himachal Pradesh; to study the accessibility and availability of the renewable natural resources on rural households; to quantify the dependence of rural household on resources for their livelihood; the estimation of natural resources and benefits on sample households and to suggest the potential for conservation and sustainability of renewable natural resources in consonance with the rural economy. The study highlighted that in the state, rural farming households have usufruct rights for timber, fuel wood, grasses and grazing in the demarcated protected forests. These rights are also extended to the un-classed forests. The important water sources in the state are canal, tanks, wells, tube wells and gravity kuhls were also studied.
