Hill Economy in Transition: A Case Study
of Kot Village in Himachal Pradesh, S.P. Saraswat, Ranveer Singh,
AERC.
The term 'transition' in the field of economics is synonymous
with technological progress, which includes all the ways in which
advances of knowledge promote economic growth. It comprises all
the productivity benefits of higher education levels, product
innovations attributable to research of economies of scale, of
the introduction of money into agriculture, and the extent of
import substitution. The report is based on a study conducted
on village Kot situated in Hamirpur district. The objectives of
study were to analyze the changes in the demographic characteristics
and its effects on the agricultural economy; to analyze structural
changes in agriculture as seen through the changes in: (a) land
holdings, tennurial system, farming system, and (b) use of input
factors; to analyze changes in agricultural production and productivity;
to analyze changes in the level and pattern of income in agricultural
sector and to study changes in the institutional and other activities
undertaken for the welfare of the people. The Investigators of
Agricultural Economics Research Centre, Delhi by personal interview
method, collected the first survey data. This information pertains
to the Agricultural Year 1959-60. The second and third surveys
data refer to the year 1989-90 and 2004-05, collected by interviewing
the respondents personally. The secondary data on various aspects
was collected from concerned departments of the State Government.
