Harnessing the Potential of the Microorganisms
of Cold Desert of Himachal Pradesh for the Production of Enzymes
of Therapeutic Importance, Wamik Azmi, Department of Biotechnology,
HPU, Shimla
Over the past decades, the industrial use of microbial enzymes
has developed rapidly because of their unique specificity for
substrates, and is gathering increasing attention. However, in
many cases, the substrates for the pharmaceutical development
are artificial compounds, and enzyme to catalyze suitable reaction
for such process is still unknown. Himachal Pradesh is endowed
with unique and diverse microbial wealth. There are many microorganisms,
particularly in upper reaches of the Himalayas, which have immense
potential for use in the pharmaceutical industry. The full potential
of those microorganisms for the production of therapeutic enzymes
is still not assessed. The study was carried out with the objectives
of collection of the soil and water samples from the cold desert
of Himachal Pradesh; isolation of microbes from the soil and water
samples; screening of the isolated microorganisms for the therapeutic
enzymes; development of the method for the assay of the therapeutic
enzymes and identification and characterization of microorganisms
isolated from the cold desert area.
