Research Projects are being undertaken by IIHS on following two thematic areas suggested by the UGC in the year 2003.

1. Natural Environment and Sustainable Development in Himachal Himalaya and

2. Social, Cultural and Economic Dimensions in the Development of Himachal Himalaya. Besides this the Institute approached eminent scholars, those who have been working on Himachal Himalaya for long period of time, to compile status reports of their work. The compilation work was assigned in form of a project.
