Other
activities initiated by the Institute of Integrated Himalayan
Studies include seminars, workshops and training programmes and
expert lectures. The
Institute has started a number of activities so as to percolate
the benefits of research output and expertise for the benefit
of society.
1. Academia
– Community Interface
The IIHS has
set up a Himalayan Study Circle including members from
different sections of the community in September 2005. It is an
outreach effort of the IIHS for an open interaction among the
people of Himachal and the Himachal Pradesh University. It is
established to encourage an exchange of views among experts from
various fields and citizens, on a common platform. A number of
lectures were organized by the HSC. The Himalayan Study Circle
is reaching the community through:
- Lectures
and discussions on strategic and significant contemporary issues
in Himachal Pradesh.
- Building
linkages with citizens, Cooperatives, Women Organizations, CBOs,
NGOs Technocrats, Extension Workers, Scientists, Decision Makers
and Development Experts.
- Reaching
out to the entire state through publications.
Himalayan
Study Circle organized the following lectures
i. Expectations
and Challenges of Teaching-Learning in 21st Century by Prof.
Amrik Singh, Eminent Educationist, Former Secretary- General,
Association of Indian Universities.
ii. Putting
People at the Centre of Development, by H.S. Anand (IAS),
Director General, Haryana Institute of Public Administration.
iii. Information
and Communication Technology in Higher Education, Vivek Sawant
,Managing Director, Maharastra Knowledge Corporation Ltd.,
Pune.
iv. Himachal,
A Road Map to Development: An Outsider's Perspective, by Prof.
Ashish Bose, Member, Population Commission of India
2. Capacity
Building Programme for Farmers
In the year
2004, a training programme was organized in collaboration with
WINROCK International and MRDA (NGO) for raising quality nursery
and apple grafting at Rampur and Hatkoti by inviting an expert,
viz. Mr. John Asseleges from USA. Over 100 farmers were present
at Rampur and more than 150 farmers attended the same at Hatkoti.
3. Community
Preparedness Programme on Developing Volunteers for Disaster Mitigation
National Environmental
Science Academy in collaboration with CPRI, Shimla and IIHS, organized
“Community Preparedness Programme on Developing Volunteers for
Disaster Mitigation” from 23-26 September 2004.
4. Journalists
Meet at IIHS
A group of
over 15 journalists from different parts of India had interaction
with the research staff of the Institute on May 30, 2006. The
journalists were highly appreciative and were impressed by the
quantum of work being completed by the Institute. The journalists
from north east were interested in getting the reports of studies
conducted by IIHS
5. Sensitization
to Himalayan Society; a Seminar for Diaspora Group
Thirty non-resident
Indian youth from nine countries visited the Himachal Pradesh
University on 25th May 2006. Institute of Integrated
Himalayan Studies organized a seminar and highlighted the achievements,
research activities and programmes of IIHS in the context of sustainable
development in the Himalayan region.
6.Workshop
on Emerging Needs in Designing and Implementing Research Proposal
in Social Sciences.
A 4-day workshop
was organized on “Emerging Needs in Designing and implementing
research proposal in Social Sciences" between 16th
-19th Oct., 2006, in collaboration with Indian Council
for Social Sciences and Research.
7.Youth
Leadership for Environment Sustainability (District Shimla and
Solan)-Nehru Yuya Kendra Training
The Institute
of Integrated Himalayan Studies organized a collaborative training
with the Nehru Yuya Kendra, Shimla chapter on “Rural Youth
Leadership Training Programme in Environment Suitability in Himalaya
Region “from the 10th to the 16th of
February.
8. Youth
Leadership Programme at the State Level in collaboration with
Nehru Yuya Kendra Training
A 5-day programme
was organized from 5-9 March 2007 in collaboration with Nehru
Yuvak Kendra, Himachal Pradesh.
